Remembering Gil Harnett

IT is with sadness that I write to you today. Gil Harnett, a great statesman of Gawler, has died.

Gil moved to Gawler in 1955 and soon after, he developed one of the most successful business partnerships with Humphrey George.

In the 1960’s, Gil was a foundation member of the Gawler Chamber of Commerce amongst other leadership positions with community groups.

This led to Gil being elected as an Evanston Councillor in 1973. He attained the role of Deputy Mayor and eventually became Mayor in 1978.

His achievements are broad and many. Interestingly, he led a delegation to the then State Government Select committee on boundary reform.

This issue is still relevant. Other achievements include the Light square park development, the northern market (Coles) development, Reid St widening, the three-day event; and the launch of Derek Whitelock’s book ‘Gawler’ at Clonlea Park amongst other achievements.

In August 1982, Mr Harnett was on the ‘State Affair’ programme detailing Gawler’s growth.

This is still available on YouTube. On his retirement in 1989, he thanked his wife Mary for all her support.

It’s an honour to acknowledge one of Gawler’s fine statesmen.
