IF you have a car driving down your street at 4.45am, this is a motorist using the most direct route to their destination.
There is no heavy traffic to avoid at 4.45am, no long delays at traffic lights to avoid.
If this is your definition of a rat runner, and you don’t like rat runners on “your” street, then you simply don’t like motorists using the street you live on.
The ‘Edith Street Traffic Study and Recommendations’ report, dated March 2022, commissioned by the Town of Gawler, states: “The consequence of (closing) the road would result in delays and safety impacts that arise when road congestion increases.”
Closing Edith Street will force 2,400 vehicles to pass through six pedestrian crossings they don’t pass through today.
That’s over five million new vehicle passes through a pedestrian crossing per year.
I suggest that closing a road because a handful of residents wish a 100-plus year old community road was quieter simply because they live on it, while negatively impacting safety across the surrounding area, is far from a holistic solution.
