A letter in response

IN REPLY to Annette Pethick’s letter – Please Explain (Bunyip, January 31, 2024).

I count more than 160 advisory groups operating under the current South Australian Government.

The SA Voice to Parliament will operate under the same arrangements as all of these, including appropriate remuneration.

Would Ms Pethick like the South Australian public to vote on the membership of all of these boards, or is she only concerned about those that address Indigenous affairs?

The social justice platform of the SA Labor Party was well known at the last election.

If you cast your vote, you had your say.

If your party lost, then that’s the nature of democracy.

The SA State Voice to Parliament will be a legislated body and can (and probably will be) abolished by the next Liberal Government.

There will be no changes to the constitution.

So, your comparison between the recent federal referendum and this state body is somewhat misinformed.

Franky, I’m surprised that you’re not embarrassed by this continuing rant against the rights of Indigenous people to have a say in their own affairs.
