Time to change the rules

FOLLOWING the goal farce scenario in the dying moments of the match between Adelaide and Sydney, surely now is the time for the rules of AFL to enter the modern age and the real world.

Despite the constant and consistent cry from traditionalists that ‘our game’ should not be changed to preserve ‘tradition’, many changes have been made over many years, except a number of major ones.

The centre bounce must be removed from the game completely. It is simply unfair unless performed perfectly on all occasions by the officiating umpire and that just doesn’t happen.

Secondly, if the ball hits the upright goal post but continues to go over the goal line then a goal is registered.

It’s as simple as that; with that rule change a goal review is not required – end of problem.

The KISS principle works again: Keep it simple stupid.
