Courts under threat

I OBSERVE Gawler Council’s planning officers recommending the demolition of historic tennis courts and memorials in the heart of the area formerly known as the Church Hill State Heritage Area.

Proposed is removal of historic protection to allow the clearing of the site (including all trees) to enable the construction of a “secret” number of dwellings.

Secret because the community will not be a party to those negotiations.

Will future tourists gaze in wonder at a multi-unit residential development overshadowing and blocking views of the historic church in Orleana Square? Perhaps part of Orleana Square will be subdivided next under this regime.

The community will find out when the bulldozers arrive.

Perhaps attend council’s Assessment Panel meeting at the Civic Centre tomorrow at 6.30pm to observe the sophistication and wisdom of our “guardians” of community heritage.

N. Jacobs,
Gawler
