Council rates too high

HAVE lived in Gawler for the past 38 years and love being here.

My concern is the way the council rates are increasing rapidly each year.

It won’t be long before I will retire and wonders if I will be able to afford to pay those rates.

Ten years ago, I paid $1185, this year it’s $2224.

That is an increase of more than $1000. Will it be $4000 in five years’ time and how do council expect anyone to manage such a huge bill.

A lot of people are struggling financially already and especially during COVID-19.

My wage has certainly not doubled and my income will reduce when I retire.

The rates goes up as your house value goes up.

I didn’t buy my house to make money out of it; it is my home, a roof over my head.

I wonder how many families are struggling under the weight of huge rates imposed on them.

Elisabeth,
Willaston
