Antiques roadshow a winner

THE inaugural Southern Barossa Antiques Roadshow saw hundreds of Southern Barossans and visitors to the region turn out with their treasures and curios, seeking appraisals and valuations.

Organisers deemed the event at Lyndoch’s Barossa Chateau earlier this month highly successful and said it exceeded expectations.

Lyndoch Community Committee and the Southern Barossa Alliance spokesman Steve Balch said an eclectic mix of more than 420 items were registered for valuation.

“Everything from World War I art done in a prison camp to glass objects made from uranium ore were brought in for evaluation,” Mr Balch said.

“One young Barossan was gob-smacked to learn that a passed-down dining room set of antique chairs and a table could bring more than $7500 at auction.”

Mr Balch said it was many of the much-loved curios that brought laughs among the audience of more than 350. He said: “Two antique teddy bears were valued – but not for sale – as was a 1937 volume of Mickey Mouse’s thoughts. Priceless!”

Mr Balch said the success of the day had encouraged the group of organisers to now make it an annual event.
