Serenity garden

FROM the position of a battered child placed in a home for her own protection as well as being a woman who had to protect herself and children with a court restraining order, I would like to comment on the proposed Gawler mural commemorating women and children who have lost their lives to domestic violence (“Picking up the pieces”, The Bunyip, 18/8/21).

It is a lovely idea to remember the women and children who have not survived the violence inflicted on them but I really question the placing of the mural. Would these poor innocents be pleased to know they are being remembered on a piece of ground that once housed a public toilet?

I would like to offer an alternative idea. What about a contemplative serenity garden that incorporates the mural and seating in another part of the riverbank.

There are a lot of nice walking paths and treed spaces that would be more sympathetic and in keeping with the sentiments of hope and inspiration.
