Why Light, Mr Banks?

To the Editor,

With the state election only 10 weeks away, I was interested to see One Nation announce Alex Banks as their candidate for Light.

It’s an interesting move.

From what I can see, Mr. Banks is a proud North East man and in past elections, he has been busy running for the seat of King and putting his support behind Bob Day as a member of the Australian Family Party.

That’s all well and good for the people of Golden Grove and surrounds, but it does make you wonder; what’s a bloke from the north-east suburbs doing in Gawler?

It seems a bit rich to rock up here at the eleventh hour and expect us to think he’s one of us.

Does he even live in the seat of Light?

Or is he planning to represent us remotely – work via home style – from the other side of the Little Para River?

I suppose you have to give One Nation some credit for actually showing up.

At least they’ve got a candidate on the ballot – which is more than we can say for the Libs. Hello? Is the SA Liberal Party still a thing, or have they just given up on our region entirely?

The most confusing part, though, is the sudden change of heart.

Not long ago, Mr. Banks was on social media quite clearly stating he wouldn’t be running this time around. So, what changed?

Why the sudden interest in a community he appears to have no ties to after saying he was out of the political arena?

We deserve a representative who actually knows our streets, our area, not someone just looking for a seat – any seat – to run in.

I noticed that another One Nation member has been nominated to run in King (Mr Banks previous electorate) have One Nation just pushed Mr Banks to one of their vacant electorates in a desperate bid to grab some votes from an empty Liberal seat?

If Mr. Banks wants our votes, he should start by explaining why he’s here now when he said he wouldn’t be, and most importantly whether he actually calls Light home.
