I’VE just watched part of a [TV] segment on the Gawler Bunyip newspaper. I’d like to tell you about the time (June 1970) when my family and I were travelling by car to Perth from the NT, via QLD, NSW, VIC and SA.
We stopped in Gawler overnight, sleeping in the car, with the windows slightly open.
Unfortunately we did not realise until about 60 miles north that our cat was not in the car.
As we had to catch the train to Perth we could not return to look for her.
We were able to place one ad into the Gawler Bunyip with a detailed description of our beloved puss.
She was wearing a collar, which helped.
A couple of days after we arrived in Perth we received a telegram from the Headmaster of the Gawler Primary School to say that he had found our cat and had put her on a plane to Perth.
She was so pleased to see us when we picked her up from the airport.
We did contact him to thank him and he refused to accept repayment for his costs.
The story was actually written up in the Sydney Morning Herald Column 8. 53 years later we still are very grateful to The Bunyip and the wonderful Headmaster.
