Thank you, Long John

I WAS very saddened to read “Long John Retires” (The Bunyip 16/10/24).

The annual Rotary Village Fair is a great community event with many interesting attractions, but top of the list must be the antics of Long John.

Over the years Long John and Fat Barry have provided much fun, joy and wonder to many children (and their parents).

I even get much pleasure watching my children share their life-lasting memories of these two characters with their children.

I hope and pray that Long John has a rush of young apprentices hammering at his door to volunteer their own time, energy and enthusiasm and seeking his guidance as to how to master this art.

In my opinion it’s not just about walking on stilts, it’s about learning a skill that spreads fun, joy and stimulates a sense of wonderment within children and adults alike.

On behalf of my children and my grandchildren, I thank John Bolton for the disciplined effort he made to learn this skill, but more importantly to the many years of generosity and commitment he has made to entertain and fascinate the many families that attend the annual Gawler Village Fair (and other events).

Thank you John.

PS. Pity about the “three-legged man”.

Your version was much better and more entertaining than the other bloke’s.
