Young BMX riders flock to Gawler

THE weather was perfect
for the Gawler BMX Club
to host round three of the
2021 Auscycling South
Australia BMX Series on
March 28.
This event was open to
all Auscycling licensed riders
within South Australia
and beyond to compete and
gain points towards the 2021
Auscycling South Australia
BMX State Series and the
2021 Auscycling BMX National
Cup.
The 319 riders in total –
the most seen at any South
Australian BMX State Series
event this year – comprised
a large contingent of local
riders, but also visitors from
Victoria, Northern Territory
and Western Australia, making
for fierce competition.
The action showcased 20-
inch racing, as well as Cruiser
and Retro classes battling
it out for the illustrious first
place on the podium, and
there was also room for the
smallest riders – with the
mini wheelers (four-and-under
on balance bikes) and
sprockets (seven-and-under)
showcasing the sport for all
ages.
The biggest races of the
day were the 10 and 11 boys’
races, with more than 20 riders
in each race.
Kade McNamara of Happy
Valley dominated the 10-
boys’ field and Jett Petz held
off the competition to win
first place in the 11-boys.
The Cove’s Matthew Tidswell
picked up the fastest
time in the men’s superclass
with a speedy 30.43 second
lap time, while Happy Valley’s
Joel Marsh came second
at 31.25 and the Cove’s
Dontay Cooper grabbed third
with 32.71.
The women’s superclass
was just as exciting, with
Happy Valley riders gaining
the top two positions on the
podium courtesy of Georgia
Potter – who clocked the
fastest lap in the final with
35.75 – and followed closely
behind by Teagan Fox with
36.70.
The day was a credit to the
Gawler BMX Club, ensuring
racing went smoothly and
providing food and refreshments
for all riders and spectators.
The club is at Elliot
Goodger Memorial Park in
Willaston and was established
more than 40 years
ago, and is still run completely
by volunteers.
