XAVIER Saints commenced its Barossa, Light & Gawler combined tennis division one premiership defence with a comfortable 10-set win over South Lyndoch.
South Lyndoch snatched a 9-6 win over Jayden Ruediger and Michael Oermann, but the Saints were a class above elsewhere.
Tyson Ruediger and Damian McGee easily won their men’s doubles match 9-0.
McGee and Jayden Ruediger celebrated a 6-1 win, while Oermann and Tyson Ruediger took a 6-3 victory in the reverse doubles matches.
The men’s singles sets were split, with Jayden Ruediger and Oermann succumbing to their South Lyndoch opponents, while Tyson Ruediger and McGee won their respective sets 7-6 and 6-0.
Meanwhile, it was completely one-sided for the ladies’ sets.
Indi Morris and Amy Turner won 9-3, while Mel Leeflang and Karen Fisher took out their set 9-1.
The reverse doubles was won in similar style, with Morris and Leeflang triumphing 6-1 and Turner and Fisher claiming a 6-0 sweep.
The Saints’ ladies conquered the singles sets in style, with Morris and Fisher claiming wins, both 6-1.
Meanwhile, Nuriootpa got its campaign got off to the perfect start by beating Kapunda by six sets.
Last season’s runner-up, Kapunda, struggled in the men’s doubles, winning three of its four sets.
Mick Matters and Josh Matthews claimed its one win, in a 7-6 thriller.
The singles sets were split at 2-2, with Matters and Matthews both claiming victories for Kapunda.
Grant Prior fell 1-6 to his opponent.
Nuri sealed the win in the ladies’ singles sets, taking a clean sweep.
Sarah Johnson and Kylie Wendt both lost 0-6, while Julia Smith and Helen Mickan were each defeated 4-6 in their respective sets.
It was split down the middle in the doubles, with Wendt and Smith and Wendt and Mickan both losing their sets.
Mickan and Johnson, and Smith and Johnson sealed hard fought wins in their sets.
In division two, Tod Street is on the winner’s list after it defeated Willaston by four sets.
Riley Gill and Hudson Nicolai were terrific in a 6-4 win over Aidan Ponton and Paul Butterworth, while Jared Rozman and Steve Nicolai grinded out a 7-6 victory over Brett Fitzpatrick and Andrew Styles.
Riley and Janelle Gill then knocked off Ponton and Angela Edwards 6-2 in the reverse mixed doubles, while Hudson Nicolai and Jodie Gibbins pipped Butterworth and Edwards 6-4.
Both Steve and Hudson Nicolai had to fight for their singles wins, with the former saluting 7-5 and the latter 6-4.
Elsewhere, Xavier Saints knocked off Lyndoch by four sets.
Rob Polito and Francis Pellizzari were terrific in their singles sets, both winning 6-2 over Angus Magarey and Jake Herrmann, respectively.
Jayne Polito and Carolyn Thorne were also great in the ladies’ sets, claiming 6-1 wins over Di Lane and Karen Cocks,respectively.
