Winter tennis proves a success
1 min read

THE Gawler & District Tennis Association’s (GDTA) Wednesday night mixed social competition wrapped up last week after almost three months of play, with the summer season now right around the corner.
GDTA president Rebecca Leo said the association wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to get people out on the courts as the COVID-19 guidelines were friendly to the sport.
“Tennis has been one of a very few fortunate sports during this period with in-house club competitions allowed to recommence as early as June 18,” she said.
“The GDTA wanted to capitalise on this and get people playing sport again as we believed it was essential for good mental health during this time, so we created a Wednesday night mixed social competition which started in early July and went through to finals night on (last Wednesday).
“We had 28 players enter into teams of two and dispersed throughout a division one and two, and while some of these players were a bit doubtful of a winter season working for tennis, they quickly became part of a new community and thoroughly enjoyed the season.”
Leo said it was a massive success as the competition not only kept regular tennis players active and engaged, but it also introduced some new faces to the game and to the league.
“We also acquired some new players to the association – some are going on to either continue in the social competition, or play in our Saturday summer competition,” she said.
Full details and nomination dates in relation to our competitions, for both summer and winter, can be found on its website at (www.gawlertennisassociation.com).
