Willaston remains front-runner
3 min read

WILLASTON has sole possession of first-place on the Barossa Light & Gawler Football Association senior colts ladder after capitalising on Freeling’s poor accuracy to win 8.12 (60) to 2.12 (24).
Zac Meyvogel kicked four for the Donnybrooks, while for the home side Owen Matz and Mitchell Lovell’s hard work deserved better finishing up forward.
South Gawler handled Tanunda 7.16 (58) to 1.9 (15) in another shoddy display of goal kicking, but the Lions’ league-leading goal-kicker Thomas Clements still managed four goals to extend his gap on the competition to seven goals.
Coan Linke kicked the Magpies only goal, while Boyd Worden and Joseph Arnold were the best around the ground for the home Lions.
In the tightest contest of the round, Barossa District left Kapunda with a 7.5 (47) to 5.2 (32) win to remain as one of four sides with only one loss on the season.
Nathan Johnson was named best on ground for the Bulldogs with a goal capping off his midfield work, while Bomber Jack Mosey kicked three of his side’s seven goals in a great effort.
In a game the visitors would like to forget, Gawler Central went down 0.1 (1) to 9.18 (72) at Angaston in a smothering performance from the Panthers.
Forward Malakye Kohlhagen (one goal) was clean in trying conditions, as was A-grader Henry Ratcliff (two goals), while power forward Mitchell Carter claimed best-on-ground honours without a goal highlighting his around-the-ground efforts.
In junior colts action, Angaston beat Gawler Central 1.3 (9) to 0.3 (3) in a wet weather slog that produced one of the lowest scoring games you’ll ever see.
Panther Tyrell Burgess kicked the game’s only goal in the second quarter, while Nate Oldman and Levi Butterfield were named the Tigers’ best.
Barossa District showed why it is a perfect 5-0 with a shutout 11.10 (76) to 0 win at Kapunda.
Elijah Grantham kicked four goals for the visitors as one of seven individual goal kickers, while Lachlan Woods and Trent Reynolds were the Bombers deserving of acknowledgment for their efforts.
Freeling, like Angaston, kicked 1.3 (9), but was on the wrong end of the ledger as Willaston put up 8.13 (61).
Heath Growden was the game’s only multiple-goal kicker with two, with teammates Riley Palk and Jack Ryan getting on the scoresheet after solid all-round games.
South Gawler went down to Tanunda 2.5 (17) to 4.6 (30) in the match of the round with a spot in the top-four on the line.
Jack Reudiger and Nathan Elliot (two goals) were the Lions’ best on the day, but Sam Noack and Darcy Thompson nabbing two apiece for Tanunda provided enough firepower in the wet weather.
In under-13s, Gawler Central held onto its unbeaten record with a nervy 2.3 (15) to 1.8 (14) win at Angaston.
Connor Gammie and Aidan Schubert kicked the two goals for the winners, with Hayden Henke the lone scorer for Angaston.
In the round’s biggest upset Barossa District got its first win 2.3 (15) to 0.3 (3) and, in doing so, handed Kapunda its first loss.
Using the wet weather to its advantage to keep the scoring down, Jordan Crack and Angus Pringle kicked the game’s only goals while Bulldog teammates Kai Carson and Tate Graham were named best-on-ground.
Freeling replaced Willaston in the top-four after the Redlegs held on late to grind out a 4.3 (27) to 3.6 (24) win.
Freeling’s Zac Trestrail put two through the big sticks as wayward kicking meant Willaston went into the fourth quarter at just 1.6, leaving too much work to do late in tough conditions.
Tanunda remains in the finals’ hunt after a crucial 3.2 (20) to 2.3 (15) win at South Gawler, with the result leaving the Magpies just one game out of the top-four.
Magpie Mason Feltus moved into an outright lead in the goal-kicking race with one of his side’s three goals, with teammates Thomas Godwin and Flynn Martin getting the others.
For the Lions, Jack Galbreath and Jermaine Miller tried their best in the close loss.
