Willaston Oval set to light up
1 min read

WILLASTON Football Club has welcomed a $156,700 State Government grant towards new light towers at Willaston Oval that will allow night-time sport and training.

The cash is part of the government’s Grassroots Facilities and Community Recreation and Sport Facilities programs.

Permanent lighting for the oval will be used for games and training and allow more training and matches during the week, increasing participation and helping to attract and retain players.

Willaston president Aldo Pasin told The Bunyip he hoped the towers would be installed in the off-season, depending on further fundraising.

He said lighting would allow increased participation and provide more flexibility for training and games to be hosted after hours.

“The installation of lights will increase use of the facility year-round, particularly during the short days of the winter months,” Mr Pasin said.

Member for Light Tony Piccolo said he was pleased the upgrade would provide increased opportunities for players to train and play.

“This is not just about building better sporting facilities, it is about building stronger, healthier and more active communities by promoting physical activity and social connection,” Mr Piccolo said.

“I hope the new lights will also provide more opportunities for female and junior participation in social and competitive sport.

“Community sport infrastructure is a valuable investment in building community spirit and pride.”

The club held a special event on July 19 to recognise the support of the more than 80 local businesses and organisations who sponsor the club.

“Without the support of sponsors, so much of the work that club does for the community would not be possible,” Mr Pasin said.

“Thank you to all who were able to attend the Willaston football and netball club sponsors’ day.

“Our clubs wouldn’t run without the generosity of each and every one of our sponsors. Support those who support us.”
