Virginia advances to grand final
1 min read

JANET DAY

VIRGINIA has prevented an all Sandy Creek grand final by defeating Sandy Creek Green by three goals in the Gawler & District A-grade preliminary final on Saturday afternoon.
The match was awe-inspiring from start to finish, despite both sides missing their regular goal shooters.
Tight defensive work by Virginia unsettled Green’s goalie combination, and it only trailed by one at the first change.
Tammy Lamont commanded the goal circle for Virginia in the second quarter and helped her side gain a one-goal lead at half-time.
Both centres played a significant role in feeding the ball up and down the court, and there was a great tussle between Virginia goal attack Grace Nicol and Sandy
Creek Green goal defence Celeste Collinson.
The Cockatoos regained the lead by one at three-quarter-time.
The Green side made one change going into the last quarter and a total of 24 goals were scored, keeping the umpires busy, with the lead changing several times.
Several costly turnovers from the Cockies, the speed of Nicol, and the steadiness and composure of Lamont in goals saw Virginia emerge victorious.
Meanwhile, in the B-grade match, United comfortably disposed of Xavier Saints by 23 goals.
United broke away to a nine-goal lead at halftime, before extending it out to 16 goals at the final break.
Erin Roe was terrific in goalie and helped pile on more goals to seal the win.
In the C-grade, Gumnuts knocked off Lutheran by 22 goals.
