Undermanned Rangers struggle

WITH five senior players missing because of a wedding, Gawler Rangers struggled in a 3-17 loss to West Torrens in division two baseball, while the B grade side managed its first win of the season.

Errors and good batting by the opposition saw a 1-9 score at the top of the third inning, as the Rangers struggled to keep pace.

Gawler’s Josh Lands belted a home run, providing a rare highlight, as was his double play from third base in the final dig.

This week the Rangers travel to Christie Downs to play Southern Districts.

A great pitching performance by division three coach Rick Leonard saw Gawler’s B grade beat West Torrens 8-2.

Leonard threw six innings for three hits and  11 strikeouts in a dominant performance, with Zac Ainsworth finishing the job on the mound in the final frame.

Gawler scored three runs in the second inning, with Ainsworth hitting a two-run single and Noah Okeil a RBI hit for a great start.

In the fifth dig, Travis Schreier doubled, his brother Nathan singled, as did Leonard for another pair of runs, while the Rangers last at bat saw Travis Schreier smash a three-run home run.

The Rangers’ division seven team just missed out on the points after conceding five last inning runs to go down 6-10 to Henley & Grange, with Theo Stirling collecting four hits, and Sarah-Jane Jameson doing a great job on the mound.

With just seven players, the Rangers under 13-1 team beat Sturt 12-6.

Deakin Filko went 4/4 at the plate, including two home runs, while Bethan Lee collected three hits and two free passes to also “be perfect” with the bat.
