Uley traffic fix identified
1 min read

PLAYFORD Council has added installing bus stop indentations along Uley Road to its list of infrastructure upgrade priorities, but a fix to school traffic is set to be more than four years away.

At their Strategic Planning Committee meeting last night, elected members discussed the possible addition of indented bus stops along the busy road, which services Trinity College Blakeview, Craigmore High School and Blakeview Primary School.

In May, councillor Misty Norris moved a motion requesting the financial details of installing the bus stops, which would reduce congestion and increase safety for students.

The report tabled at last night’s meeting – held after The Bunyip’s print deadline – said each stop would cost council between $65,000 and $95,000.

It also stated the State Government would not help fund the stops’ installation, meaning the cost would fall on ratepayers.

“Whilst the DPTI (Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure) PTO (Public Transport Operations) team have shown their support for the installation of indented bus stops along this section of Uley Road, they have advised that the State Government will not be in a position to contribute funding towards their construction,” the report read.

“This is because indented bus stops are a local traffic priority measure and do not improve the efficiency of bus services.”

The upgrades were also placed on council’s Road Transport Priority List, but was ultimately considered a “low priority,” meaning it may not be delivered inside the next four years.

A pedestrian crossing bay is also set to be installed later this year, with council to conduct further foot and vehicle counts in the area in a bid to install more safe ways for students to cross the road.
