Trinity retains Intercol Trophy
1 min read

TRINITY College retained its Intercol Trophy against the visiting St Michaels last week after winning three of the five ‘showcase’ games’, but it was the Saints who left with the football bragging rights.
The basketball went as expected as Trinity – one of the best five basketball schools in the entire country – scraped out a 80-66 win in what coach Rupert Sapwell called “a moral victory” for St Michaels.
Trinity only actually won one quarter – the second – by a margin of 24-7, with the other three all decided by less than a basket in St Michaels’ favour. Trinity’s Ayual Garang and St Michaels’ Toby Woolcock won their teams’ respective medals for best-on.
Trinity cruised home in the netball as well, taking it 59-35 after a 17-5 first quarter.
Alyssa Jones was named the game’s medallist for Trinity, while Taylah Dawkins brought home the honours for the visitors.
St Michaels got its first point of the day in the girls soccer in a resounding 5-0 drubbing with Alanna De Nadai best-afield.
Trinity secured its Intercol win with an intense penalty shoot-out in the boys soccer after scores were locked at one-all at full-time.
Trinity goalkeeper Vincent Barbaro received the medal for his heroics in the shootout, saving two penalties to send spectators into raptures with the knowledge the trophy was locked up for another year.
At the conclusion of all the other events, the crowd surrounded the main oval to catch the last quarter of the first-18 football.
With a genuine four-goal breeze blowing a gale to one end, Trinity went into three-quarter-time leading by three goals and was immediately under pressure.
A couple undisciplined free-kicks gifted St Michaels’ forwards some difficult chances from deep in the pocket late in the game, with the match-winning goal coming from close to 40-out on the boundary after the Trinity defender shoved his opponent in the back with the ball crossing the line to give the Saints a 11.18 (84) to 12.6 (78) win.
