THE Gawler Rangers Baseball Club has called on its past players to return to the game, even if it is only for the social grades, as its original little-leaguers reach adulthood.
Gawler Rangers president Darko Filko pointed out that the reasons kids might have originally given up the sport may not be factors anymore, while Gawler Mayor and club vice-patron Karen Redman has sent a letter of support to see Rangers in top grade district baseball.
“Since the club started in 2007, many talented players have passed through the junior ranks only to be lost to the game in the teens when other activities, like part time work, took more prominence,” he said.
“Some of those little-leaguers are now in their mid-20s – a perfect age to become involved again.”
The club is entering the most important phase of its history as it endeavours to be promoted to Division One status. The club said it would be a huge achievement if it can attain this standing in such a short space of time.
“With the virus possibly keeping the United States players back home and the Adelaide Giants requiring local players for the state team, it seemed like the ideal time to make our push for Division One,” added Filko.
“If clubs need to use local players rather than imports, it will be more of an ‘equal playing field’. Our intention is always to use ‘home grown’ players wherever possible.
“Over the years, because we didn’t have Division One status, a number of our good juniors have moved on to play top grade. We really would like to get some of these back, if not all.”
As well as pushing for Division One, Filko said the club is hoping to add depth throughout its different teams and levels.
“The competition will be fierce for positions in the top team and we welcome players to try out to compete there, but equally we need players for the lower teams,” he added.
“We would like to hear from all who have passed through the ranks, even if not intending to play.”
“Our first training session will be on Sunday in early August.  It would be wonderful to see a good turn out and catch up with the original faces – even if just to come out for a sausage and a drink.”
