IN a heart-stopping final day of the Barossa and Light Cricket Association A1-reserves season, Gawler Central beat Lyndoch by three runs to leapfrog into the last finals spot, before Cricket Australia called for cricket nation-wide to be cancelled.
Defending 217, the Tigers started with a bang, with Adam Byster removing both openers for two combined runs on his way to figures of 3/57 from 20 overs of work.
Lyndoch captain Trent Burge chipped in with a much needed 35 runs in the four-spot, but it wasn’t until Ryan Muirhead came in at eight that things tightened up.
Muirhead scored 79 from 101 deliveries, and his partnership with number-10 George Clarridge (38 not-out) brought the side to 8/206, but after Muirhead fell, the visiting number-11 couldn’t hold on, finishing all out for 214.
Greenock won its meeting with Light Pass to decide which of the two would take home the minor premiership, with the home bowling attack leaving a relatively easy chase of 103.
Ben Roennfeldt backed up his 4/40 with the ball to contribute a crucial 20 middle-order runs when his team needed some stability, before Liam Birchard top-scored with 32 as the eighth man out of the sheds.
Danny Kaye made things interesting for a while, taking 5/45 with six maidens from 17 overs.
Kapunda lost convincingly to claim the season’s wooden spoon after only making 62 runs in its first innings against Willaston.
Angaston defended its 8/250 total in a dead rubber against Eudunda-Robertstown, with the sides finishing sixth and seventh respectively.
In A2, the finals positions were locked in weeks ago, and even with a loss against Sandy Creek on the weekend, South Gawler claimed the minor premiership, and would have been favourites to take out the whole thing.
In A3, Lyndoch failed to capitalise on its opportunity to jump Hamley Bridge into fourth spot, bombing out for 134 in its chase of Light Pass’ 199.
In A4, Gawler Central won its twelfth game in 15 attempts to claim the minor premiership, with Mallala, Morgan and Greenock all well ahead of fifth place.
