Tigers fend off plucky Magpies

GAWLER Central made it three wins in a
row, and seven from its first eight Barossa,
Light & Gawler Netball Association Senior
1 games to sit more than a game clear
in second place after a comfortable 58-41
home win over Tanunda on Saturday.
Tigers coach Reece Turtur said while he
knew his side was a heavy favourite coming
into the contest, Tanunda was no easy-beat.
“Tanunda came out with a lot of confidence
after its first win last week, which I
knew would provide us with the challenge
we needed to keep focused and implement
our game plan,” he said. (The Magpies) had
great patches of play – it’s really great to see
them coming back strongly after a few tough
years and you can tell they aren’t far away
now.
“I did use the opportunity to change up our
combinations and test them out in a match
environment, and also rest some players who
have had heavy workloads recently.
“It probably took us a bit longer to settle
than I would’ve liked, but I was happy with
the potential I saw in those combinations and
the way it came together in the third quarter
where we really built that winning lead.”
Turtur said he was impressed with Jodie
Rich-Nourse after moving from goal attack
into goal shooter, and also gave a mention to
a couple other star performances.
“Cathy White had a really solid game in
goalkeeper – she reads the game so well and
is always very settled no matter what the
speed or situation in the game is,” he said.
“I gave her some personal challenges to
work on – like protecting the post position
– and I thought she did that incredibly well.
“I also thought Erin Scheepens had a good
impact when she came on in the second half
into our mid-court – she gives us some extra
drive and depth through that area and her linkage
from defence to attack is really valuable.”
