Tiger to celebrate 130th year
1 min read

GAWLER Central Football Club will celebrate its 130th anniversary this weekend at a function night at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
The Tigers will welcome past players, members, fans and officials as they celebrate the milestone by naming the club’s best side of the past 50 years.
Gawler Central secretary Damian Brook said the event is a  "sell out”.
“We’re trying to raise the bar a bit, and it’s been extremely well supported by everyone at the club, our members, past players, past officials,” he said.
“We have people coming from all over the place, including interstate, such as ex-players.
“There’ll be a real mixture in the crowd from all eras, dating back to the 1960s.”
The Tigers have already been celebrating the anniversary this season with their heritage guernsey, which players donned in the 1980s.
“We wanted to acknowledge the 130 years of the club by doing something significant,” Mr Brook said.
“We put together a history committee this year, that’s something we wanted to tick off.
“There’s been an online auction for the guernseys going for six weeks, and that’ll conclude on the night of the 130th dinner.
“There’s been quite a few bids, ex and current players wanting to grab their old playing numbers.
“It’s getting quite competitive for some numbers in particular.”
Mr Brook confirmed the club will wear those jumpers for the rest of the season, and they will then be distributed to the winning bidders following the last game of the year.
However, the club hasn’t ruled out making the vertical striped design a permanent feature in the future.
“It has been well-accepted and there’s been a lot of comment to that effect around the club,” Mr Brook said.
“A lot of people are very passionate about it, but if the members are keen, we’ll put it to a vote.
“The players seem to like it, we’ve had a lot of comments from opposition clubs that they like it, no clash issues.”
Cricket legend Wayne Phillips will host the Tigers’ 130th event, which gets under way at 6.30pm this Saturday.
