Three more sign on to defend flag

GAWLER Central is getting the band back together, with premiership players Nick Hooker, Daniel Stanley and Tom Phelps all signing on to return for the 2021 season to lead the Tigers’ charge for back-to-back flags.
Gawler Central A-grade coach Matt Whelan said he was ecstatic to bring all three back, including Phelps, who was a chance to leave the BL&G after arriving this past season due to COVID-19 complications with his previous club’s season.
“We’re absolutely rapt to re-sign all three guys for 2021,” he said.
“Phelps is very important to our structure – he’s an elite runner with a big engine and sets us up forward of centre.
“He’ll prove to be a difficult matchup for opposition teams – I’m looking forward to coaching Tom again.”
Hooker is spending the summer playing for the Northern Territory Football League’s Tiwi Bombers, but Whelan said he is excited for the youngsters future at the dog track.
“Nick’s only 21-years-old, but has a few seasons of A-grade footy under his belt now,” he said.
“His performance in the grand final, kicking four goals, was exceptional – we rate Nick very highly at our football club.”
Last but not least, Daniel Stanley will slot right back into the competition’s best engine room and look to add to the trophy case.
“Stanley’s record speaks for itself,” Whelan said.
“As a coach you just sit back, watch and enjoy his ability to run and deliver the footy to our forwards.
“He’s a crucial part of our midfield so it was important to get him
back.”
