Theft leaves op-shop devastated

VOLUNTEERS at a Smithfield op-shop have likened the feeling of seeing their beloved charity business burgled to having their “family home broken into”.

The SA Dog Rescue op-shop on Main North Road was ransacked sometime on Saturday night, with thieves stealing around $3500 worth of jewellery and antique pieces, and $100 cash.

Op-shop volunteer Patricia Smith said it was “devastating” to see the place her fellow volunteers put so many unpaid work hours into burgled.

“It’s such an evil act, who robs an op shop?” she said.

“They’ve trespassed on all our personal work, this is like my second home.

“We are family, we stand by each other, we are shoulder to shoulder.”

SA Dog Rescue was started by Carol Morris, who takes in animals who can’t find a home and are set to be put down by other pet adoption agencies.

Proceeds from the op-shop go to caring for the animals, which come from all around Australia as Mrs Morris saves them from euthanasia.

“She’s so dedicated, she’s been known to go 48 hours without sleep so she can care for her animals,” Mrs Smith said.

“You couldn’t ask for a more fantastic person, and for someone to come and rob this place like they did is disappointing.”

SA Dog Rescue is now calling for support for its op-shop, following the theft, with Mrs Smith hoping a company can donate roller shutters to help deter future crime.

“The clothes are $3 for a shopping bag and the shoes are $1 a pair, it’s not like we’re asking for great deals of money here,” she said.

“We’re desperate for a roller door or roller shutters to help improve security.

“We are united, there is no way known that we’re going to put up with this garbage from anybody.”
