AUSTRALIAN horse racing’s most famous prize, the Melbourne Cup trophy, will make a stop at an Edinburgh North school as part of its world tour.
St Patricks Technical College has been chosen as one of 39 destinations worldwide to receive a visit from the prestigious trophy.
The trophy will travel to six countries during its tour, and will stop at the school on September 25.
St Pat’s principal Danny Deptula said the college tendered to host the event to create “great enthusiasm and hope in the area”.
“Our college is a strong advocate for VET pathways and the racing industry is a prime example of how careers through VET can bring great satisfaction and success,” he said.
“We are absolutely delighted to be chosen for this great honour of hosting the cup.
“The college actually has a link with the Melbourne Cup, our founding staff member Terry Neville’s uncle is Ray Neville, who rode Rimfire
to victory in the 1948 Melbourne Cup.”
Ray Neville was just 15-years-old when he rode to victory in the 1948 cup on outside chance Rimfire.
Victorian Racing Club chairman Amanda Elliot said this year’s tour holds special significance for the Melbourne Cup trophy.
“Since the Tour began in 2003, we have delighted in bringing communities together in the shared history and magic of the Melbourne Cup,’’ she said.
“This year is especially significant, with 2019 marking the 100th anniversary of the three-handled Melbourne Cup trophy design.’’
