Textile weekend ready to return
2 min read

ARTISTS across Gawler will have their work displayed throughout the town next month for the bi-annual Textile Art Weekend.

On October 12 and 13, exhibitions showcasing the work of embroiders, quilters and other textile artists will pop up around the local area.

The Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club, Gawler Community Gallery, the UCare and Country Women’s Associations halls on Tod Street, and the Zion and Masonic halls will all host displays from artists, ranging from professionals to hobbyists.

The bi-annual event has been running for more than 20 years, with The Embroiderers Guild of South Australia Gawler Branch being involved in every weekend since its inception.

Member Rhonda Inwood said the Textile Art Weekend was a great way to connect Gawler’s various art groups.

“It’s good for local people to have a look, but you’d be surprised how many people come from other groups in the state who are interested in the same thing,” she said.

“If people are already on holidays up this way they know to come and have a look.

“We advertise it for people who are interested in learning embroidery and enjoy the social atmosphere of it.

“It’s interesting for us to look at other groups’ work, and the others like to come and see what we’re doing as well.”

Other groups to be involved in the showcase include the Gawler Quilting Circle, the Country Women’s Association Gawler Branch, and the Zion Quilters.

The exhibitions are free, with some groups, like the Zion Quilters, aiming to raise money for charity across the weekend.

Embroiderers Guild secretary Anne Pethick said textile arts are a great way to tap into one’s creative side.

“I enjoy all the different techniques and taking part in different workshops,” she said.

“During the weekend, there are maps everywhere to guide people to the different exhibitions.

“For some people, if they’re just at the edge of wondering what they should do in regards to textile art, it gives them the opportunity to seedifferent types of crafts.”

The Embroiderers Guild’s exhibition is open from 10am-4pm on October 12 and 13 at the UCare Hall on Tod Street, Gawler.
