Tanunda topples careless Cockatoos

SATURDAY’S Barossa & Light Cricket Association A1 one-day fixtures dished up a number of blowouts, beginning with Tanunda’s eight-wicket win over Sandy Creek.
Bailey Smith was bowling at his best for the Magpies on his way to figures of 4/18 with a maiden in his eight overs of work, removing Cockatoo captain Rhys Handtke and number four Austin Poulton before cleaning up the tail.
Corey Roberts top-scored for Sandy Creek with 20 runs before being run out by Dylan Abinett as the visitors were dismissed for 134.
Tanunda barely broke a sweat in the chase as opener and captain Trent Goers (82 not-out) kept the scoreboard ticking over to reach the target in just under 25 overs.
Blues decimate Bulls
It was a horror show in Angaston – at least for Gilbert Valley – as the Bulls were bowled out for just 31 runs, led by opener Ashley McInerney who top-scored with five runs.
Ben Antonie (3/7) got the Blues off to a ripping start by removing two of the first three batsmen quickly, with Jack Henke (3/7) helping to clean up the middle order, and Scott Rathjen (3/6) coming in late to take care of the tail.
The chase was over in less than eight overs, with Rathjen patiently cruising to 23 not out as his side claimed a 10-wicket win.
Wilson makes
his mark
Shockingly, Angaston wasn’t the only side to collect a 10-wicket win on Saturday as Mallala managed to equal the effort against Nuriootpa, but the Tigers scored enough to allow Magpie opener Brad Wilson to put on a show.
Winning the toss and batting first, Nuriootpa lost both openers cheaply and got bogged down by tight bowling, only managing four boundaries in the full 40 overs before running out of time on 7/89.
Bart Ryan top-scored for the Tigers with 26, but didn’t have enough help to build a real total as Wilson (2/15) and Rob Montgomery (2/15) spearheaded the home bowling attack.
With a large margin for error, Wilson decided to have a smack and get his men home early.
He dispatched 11 of the 44 balls he faced to the boundary, including seven sixes, as he raced to 78 from 44 deliveries, with Cameron Curnow playing a helpful supporting role to finish 13 not-out on the way to a 10-wicket win with 28 overs to spare.
Lions falter late
The most competitive game from the weekend came from South Gawler’s visit to Greenock, with the Schlungers winning the toss and opting to bat first.
Seven Greenock batsmen made their way into double figures in a balanced performance, led by Ben Verne’s 44 not-out from 32 deliveries, on the way to a total of 9/159 at the conclusion of 40 overs.
Darcy Judd-Smith was excellent with the ball for South Gawler, taking 4/21 with two maidens in his eight overs, while Ben McMullen was just as good with figures of 4/31 with one maiden in eight overs.
The Lions’ chase was looking strong as opener Dael Redmond (40) helped build a platform of 1/59 to launch from, but it was the Schlunger bowling attack who won the day, taking 9/40 from that moment to win by 50 runs.
Ben Roennfeldt was the pick of the home bowlers, taking 4/19 in 6.4 overs.
