Tanunda, Barossa keen to retain Anzac Day fixture
1 min read

TANUNDA and Barossa District are eager to make a tradition out of hosting an annual Anzac Day clash, similar to the Nuriootpa versus Angaston match each year, after Thursday’s successful showing.

The Magpies and Bulldogs game at Tanunda Oval was well attended, with the former running out winners by 22 points.

Tanunda playing-coach Dean Terlich, who previously played on Anzac Day with Norwood in the SANFL, said he addressed his players pre-game about what competing on the date means.

“I spoke to the guys before the game and said it’s an honour,” he said.

“We had guernseys made for the day and we’re keen on locking it in for the immediate future against them.

“No matter what grade you’re playing, it’s a great honour to play on Anzac Day.

“The Last Post always sends shivers down my spine, we had a good crowd down there.

“It was a great day, it’s always a nice sentiment.”

Barossa District playing-coach Todd Miles, who didn’t play on Thursday, echoed the statement from his counterpart.

“I’m sure it was good for them (the players), I got the chance to do it at SANFL level,” he said.

“I think it’s a good idea, a lot of people go to the dawn service and then to have the option to go to the footy later is great.”

Both sides wore an Anzac-inspired heritage guernsey, and both coaches loved the addition of the special jumpers.

“They turned out well, I think it (the design) was one of the old school heritage guernseys, they did a take on that,” Terlich said.

Miles added: “It sort of started happening in pre-season, Giles O’Driscoll was putting it together, and that was the one we went with”.

Next year’s Anzac Day matches will be on a Saturday due to the leap year.
