CHRISTMAS is fast approaching and students throughout Gawler are in the spirit already.

As part of Gawler Mayor Karen Redman’s Christmas Card Competition, primary school students from Reception to Year 5 were given the opportunity to submit their own designs.

Students in those year levels who either live or attend school in the Gawler region were invited to take part in the competition.

This year was the competition’s fourth instalment and received a total of 636 entrants.

Ms Redman said the quality of this year’s entries was “outstanding.”

In category 1, Reception to Year 1, 265 entries were submitted, with Evanti Altus from Immanuel Lutheran School taking out first place.

Olivia Gogoll, also from Immanuel, was awarded second prize and Maddi Ahola of Gawler East Primary placed third.

Category 2, Years 2 and 3, had 247 entries and Marisha Beagley of Trinity College South was awarded first prize.

Amber Faast, also of Trinity, came in second and Emmylou Yip of Gawler Primary came in third.

In the final category, Years 4 and 5, 124 entries were received.

Abbey Campbell of Gawler East Primary was awarded first prize, and schoolmate Ethan Knott came in second.

Liana Michalanney of St Brigid’s Primary rounded out the winners, placing third.

First prize winners in each category received a $100 gift voucher from Gawler Bookshop, with second and third prize winners receiving a voucher worth $75 and $50 respectively.

Ms Redman thanked Allison Saddler of Gawler Bookshop for its sponsorship.

Each school also received a book pack from the Bookshop.

Ms Redman said this year she would be sending cards to prominent people such as South Australian Premier Steven Marshall and Governor Hieu Van Le, as well as all mayors around the state.
