Josh lands division’s top gong

ROB LAIDLAW
TO help cap off Gawler Rangers
Baseball Club’s historically
successful season, Josh Lands
has won the division two medal
as the competition’s best player.
It is just the second time a
Gawler senior player has won a
league medal, and the first time
by an A-grade player in a season
in which he helped Gawler’s
A-grade side reach the finals for
the first time in 14 years.
Lands polled an incredible 35
votes to be a runaway winner,
with the second-placed player a
country mile behind with 17 votes.
On accepting the medal, Lands
thanked his teammates, the club
and his partner, while also thanking
Abner Doubleday for inventing
the game, which raised a
chuckle or two in the large crowd.
It was for his work on the
mound where Lands attracted
the attention of the umpires, as
he struck out 108 batters in 100.2
innings, and finished with a 3.40
earned run average.
With the bat, Josh had 15 hits
and 16 walks, while scoring 16
runs, finishing with a .283 batting
average.
The veteran of the team set a
great example for his younger
teammates and was a major reason
why the Rangers’ division
two team had the level of success
it achieved in 2020.
