Speed change for busy intersection

A STRETCH of Curtis Road will go from an 80km/h speed limit down to 60km/h following safety concerns at the intersection with Heaslip Road.

There had been three separate incidents at the intersection in a two-week time period, and Playford councillor Clint Marsh said he’s pleased things have changed.

“This is a welcoming, short-term change that probably should’ve come 12-18 months ago when former minister Stephan Knoll made the public decision he was going to enact the Heaslip Road reduction to 60km/h,” he said.

“I’ve been advocating quite strongly, that Curtis Road, which is a local government owned road, should follow in the same steps of the State Government.”

Cr Marsh indicated he was planning to move a motion at Playford Council last week, but withdrew it following the Department of Infrastructure and Transport’s (DIT) move to change the speed.

“As there were no movements in reduction of Curtis Road, and just recently within the last month, we had three vehicle accidents in the space of two weeks, I decided I was going to be seeking the support of our council to have the administration formally submit an application into DIT to have this rezoned from an 80 to a 60,” he said.

“I withdrew that motion as I was informed by the administration they have approved and the process has gone through DIT’s processes, the road will be reduced to 60.”

Over the next month to six weeks, the public will see the signs along the stretch change, with electronic signs also giving further awareness of the speed reduction.

Cr Marsh said the growth in the area was a key component of DIT’s decision.

“What has also encouraged that change is the growth of Angle Vale and there is a new entrance onto Curtis Road,” he said.
