Spectator behaviour gets tick of approval
1 min read

WITH crowds flocking to BL&G football ovals over the weekend, club presidents have reported a near-perfect showing from spectators, with only small adjustments planned moving forward.

Willaston Football Club president Aldo Pasin said he was thrilled with the turnout, and thanked all the volunteers who helped make it possible.

“We had our sanitisers going around all day, we had counters on the gate keeping track of everyone coming in, and out, and at its peak we had over 600 people at the ground which was a fantastic number,” he said.

“We might need to make a few small adjustments around the canteen, which we identified as probably just on the wrong side of what we’re totally comfortable with. That will just be small things like placing cones to mark social distancing in lines, but other than that I really had no complaints.”

Gawler Central Football Club president Tom Lane made the trip to Nuriootpa for round one, and said it was great to be able to see how everything worked as his club plans to host its first game this weekend.

“Most presidents have been talking quite a bit about how we’re going to do things, so most grounds should have quite similar protocols,” he said.

“We’re going to have counters on the gate managing the number of spectators in, and to be honest, with the 1000-person limit, we might even have to turn some people away this week.

“Willaston are a very well-supported side, and that’s a credit to them, and if we hit the limit then we’re prepared for that.”

Mr Lane said while players and fans alike are asked to be mindful of the situation, having footy back at the dog track will be a great thing for the community.

“Obviously we want to win everything, but what’s more important was the smile on all the guys’ faces,” he said.

“The banter before the game was amazing, for players and fans, and the amount of enthusiasm to just be out there again with your mates was awesome.”
