Spare a can at Christmas
1 min read

A GROUP of young people is leading an effort to help the less fortunate at Christmas time.

The Gawler & District College Interact Club has launched a Can Drive and is calling on the community for support.

The drive seeks to collect as many food cans and as much non-perishable food items as possible, as well as gift vouchers, which will then be delivered to families in need over Christmas through the Food Bank organisation.

Group founder and president Renee Chamberlain said the whole group has been participating and working together to make the can drive successful.

Interact is a sub-branch of Rotary, for 12 to 18-year-olds, and is an opportunity for members develop leadership skills while discovering the power of service above self.

Teacher Tunya Greenhalgh, who supervises the group, said members also gain skills on speaking and presenting in front of groups of people.

“The group is made of a number year levels across Gawler & District College and it is fantastic to see that they all interact with each other,” she said.

Member for Light Tony Piccolo is accepting donations at his Murray Street electoral office and also said it is great to see young people working together for the benefit of the community.

Other drop-off points include the offices of local legal firm, Rudall & Rudall, or at the college administration, on Barnet Road, Evanston.

The last of the donations need to be made by Wednesday, December 9, to be distributed by Foodbank in time for Christmas.
