SOUTH Gawler held onto third place on
the Barossa, Light & Gawler Netball Association
Senior 1 ladder with a comfortable
52-34 home win against Willaston on
Saturday.
It was a relatively complete performance
from a Lions side that welcomed gun goal
shooter Aimee Feltham back into the mix after
returning from a broken wrist.
South Gawler coach Bec Brading said it
was great to have Feltham back, but this game
was mostly won in the defensive end.
“Right from the get go I felt like we brought
the intensity,” she said.
“We’ve been focusing a fair bit on our
defensive pressure the whole way down the
court, and from the start it definitely felt like
we had the jump on them.
“Erin Efthymiou came up from the Senior
2s and played wing defence, and together
with Rachel King at centre they forced a lot
of turnovers through the middle which allowed
us to get on top early.
“Erin was really good for us, and I thought
Kayla Miller in wing attack did a really good
job as well opening it up for us, and myself
and Jamee Daly down back held up well, creating
a lot of turnovers.”
Brading said squad depth was a focus coming
into the year, and its value is proving itself
time and time again.
“The depth through the twos is great, but
not just that, Aimee coming back opens up a
really strong rotation through the goalies that
we’ve been lacking,” she said.
“We’ve been very disrupted with injuries
and players being away, and we’ve
been able to survive well because of our
depth, but we do need to be getting a bit more
consistent every week if we want to play our
best netball.
“We’re pretty close to where I’d like to be,
but there’s definitely some areas we can still
improve on.”
