Slow them down

VIRGINIA residents are growing concerned with the 110km/h speed limit on Port Wakefield Road around residential streets such as McEvoy and Ryan Roads.

Locals from the Palms Residential Park, which has an older demographic, have had issues turning both ways onto Port Wakefield Road from the two intersections.

Palms resident Chris Sloper said he believes someone “will die” at the intersection if it’s not changed from 110km/h to 90km/h until after McEvoy Road.

“We’ve seen loads of prangs, there’d be two to three a week, they may not be big ones, but they’re still prangs,” he said.

“Sooner or later, someone’s going to die.”

Playford Deputy Mayor Peter Rentoulis said while you can’t change every area, this is one which needs to be given special consideration to.

“You can’t have obstacles at every single intersection and you can’t change the speed limit everywhere,” he said.

“At the end of the day, people will have to be competent and drive with due care.

“Here you have a unique situation and each should be judged on its merits.

“You have a residential area with older residents, all of them regularly using this road.

“They’re elderly, they’re ageing and respectfully, they’re slowing down.

“I think we should be looking after them, in this situation.”

Mr Rentoulis said lowering the speed limit was common sense.

“We have a 90km/h speed limit, which is adjacent with the raceway and then it turns 110km/h a bit further up,” he said.

“By the time they get to that, they’re probably doing 100-110km/h.

“It’s making traffic safer at that intersection.”
