Show goes on: 2020 grand final one for the books…
1 min read

NEARLY 2000 fans made the trip to Freeling Oval on Saturday to witness the finale of the Barossa Light & Gawler Football Association season, with Gawler Central beating South Gawler to claim the A-grade flag in the day’s main event.

With COVID tracing stations at every entry and roaming police and COVID marshals to ensure the rules were followed, the crowd was immaculately behaved, with no disciplinary action taken all day.

League president Mick Brien said it was a credit to the spectators, and reflected on one of the most unique seasons in the league’s history.

“We ended up with around 2000 – I think we got close to capacity at one point but we didn’t have to turn anyone away which was good,” he said.

“Everyone was very respectful of the conditions – nobody went on the oval, and they were seated to drink alcohol, which was all we were asking from people really.

“It was a tough season all the way through with a lot of challenges, but it went as well as it could’ve I think.

“We’re happy we were able to get people out playing footy and coming to watch it, because there were a lot of other areas in the state that didn’t get to.”

Mr Brien also thanked everyone that went into making such a successful finals series at Freeling.

“I’d like to thank all the clubs and the volunteers they all supplied – we couldn’t do it without you,” he said.

“Also to the umpires, and officials, and supporters – it was great to see everyone out and about with smiles on their faces.”
