THE Barossa, Light & Gawler women’s football league has announced its coaches for the North and South sides for the upcoming interleague match on July 28 at Freeling Oval.
The North team will be coached by Central District assistant and Tanunda coach Nat Seaman while the South squad will be mentored by South Gawler’s Brenton Craig.
The competition, which has been named the ‘Co-op Cup’, will be a three-game series across the under 14s, under 17s and the senior grades to determine an overall winner.
Additionally, BLGW chairperson Adam Butcher said entry will be charged for the first time ever and all proceeds will go towards ovarian cancer awareness.
“Every girl that’ll play in the games will wear a ribbon in their hair for ovarian cancer to raise money and awareness,” he said.
“We’re going to charge entry into the game, which will be a $2 entry for everyone over the age of 12, all that money will go towards ovarian
cancer.
“There’ll be raffles and stuff on the day.”
Kapunda local Megan McWaters has been personally affected by the disease, and was more than happy when Mr Butcher came to her
about the idea. “We’ve lost my aunty, my grandmother and my mum
has been battling it for nearly five years,” she said.
“Adam got in contact with me and said about the girls getting together, and suggested to use it as an awareness day as well.
“The more awareness there is, the better off we are.
The interleague game concept was created due to the BLGW’s strength at last year’s central zone country championships, where it
didn’t concede a goal across the entire weekend.
Mr Butcher said the strength of the competition is phenomenal.
“We have a lot of experience with these coaches in the league that are now down at Central District and about 15 or 16 girls that are down
there too,” he said.
“Hopefully next year we have an association game next year.
“Its (interleague match) had so much positive feedback, we only play a nine-week season, it gives them a month of training and it’ll be played on a full oval.”
Mr Butcher added both the under 14s and under 17s will have 22 players available on the day, and the seniors will have 24.
