GAWLER Central’s Dayna Schmid capped off a sensational individual return season to the club by claiming its senior one netball best and fairest earlier this month.
The 24-year-old goalie re-joined her junior team after years at the Central District Netball Club in Adelaide, where she was coached by current Tigers mentor Reece Turtur.
Schmid admitted she was stunned to have received the best and fairest award.
“I was a bit shocked, it’s a team full of bloody superstars,” she said.
“I was very humbled by it, especially being out here for the first year.”
Despite her individual success, she said she initially found it difficult to adjust from indoor to outdoor netball.
“It’s been very challenging, actually,” Schmid said.
“The type of game is a lot different out here, the skill level isn’t as high, I think it’s actually more challenging to get around players you’re not used to.
“I had to dive in head first (into the weather), really; the first game we had that was torrential rain was at Angaston, and we got drenched.
“There was no dry spot to shoot (from), no spot to dry your hands.
“But, I think our best shooting was in the rain, it was more accurate because there was more emphasis to get the ball in and take more high-percentage shots under the ring.”
The Tigers star said she was drawn back to the club by her former coach, Turtur.
“He’s so passionate about netball and he pushes that into the team, he’s strategic,” Schmid said.
“It’s been a bit different this year with strategy, this team has been a lot more skilled and experienced where we just need to speak about something and it’ll happen.
“A lot of us have played together in the past, so the combinations are there.”
With the 2019 season done and dusted, Schmid said she’ll be hanging around at Gawler Oval next year.
“I had a few offers (to go elsewhere), but I think I’ll stick with Gawler Central,” she said.
