GAWLER Central collected
its second double-digit
win over Kapunda this
season after Saturday’s 56-
40 home triumph against
the experienced, respected
Bomber side, thanks in large
part to Dayna Schmid’s 50
goals.
The win solidifies the Tigers’
position, trailing only
the undefeated Barossa District
on the ladder, with the
Bulldogs handing Gawler
Central its only loss back in
round six.
For Kapunda, the loss
moves it to a record of 8-4,
occupying the fourth and
final postseason spot, with
Angaston two wins behind as
the only side with a chance to
threaten the Bombers in the
run home.
Gawler Central coach
Reece Turtur said a lot of
planning goes into a fixture
against Kapunda, and it’s important
to keep them guessing.
“The first time we played
them we went in with a fairly
specific gameplan, and we
were pleased with that performance
and how it worked,”
he said.
“Coming into this particular
contest we didn’t want
to stray too far from what
worked, but we wanted to
fine tune it a little bit to make
sure we’re still keeping Kapunda
guessing, because if
they figure out what you’re
trying to do they can shut it
down pretty quick.
“We’ve spoken a lot over
the past couple of weeks
about reinforcing our defensive
pressure, and I think that
stood out to me this week
with how well the girls responded
to that.
“They have really skilled,
experienced shooters, so the
plan was to really make them
work without the ball to try
and fatigue them, and just
force them into spots they’re
less comfortable in.” While it
was a great team effort, Turtur
gave a special mention to
Erin Scheepens for how she
rose to a tough task.
“Erin Scheepens was outstanding
at wing attack for
us,” he said.
“She came up against Tayla
Meaney, who we know is a
key player for Kapunda, and I
thought she did a brilliant job
at containing her impact on
the game.
“Dayna Schmid was also
phenomenal in goal shooter –
she had 50 goals on the day,
which was more than Kapunda
had total, so it’s hard to
overstate how good she was.”
