JANET DAY
SANDY Creek continued its relentless run to the Gawler & District A-grade netball premiership on Saturday, smashing sister side Sandy Creek Green by 15 goals.
The margin at half-time was only 10 goals, with Sandy Creek coach Scott Hill having his players well versed to play in all positions, starting valuable defender Jenny Dyson in goals.
Madeline Jones worked hard in defence for the Green team, with Hayley Brooks finding the goal ring with ease.
Brooke Barnes was solid all day in wing attack, passing the ball into the circle to the Cockies’ goalies, who helped their team to a comfortable win.
Elsewhere, Xavier Saints defeated Gumnuts by six goals, following a terrific opening quarter.
The Saints were sensational under the goal ring and shot their way to a 15-6 lead at quarter-time through the hard work of Ellisha Scordo.
From there on, it was a struggle for Gumnuts to catch up, although Brooke Moreland in centre was playing an outstanding game, passing the ball to goal attack Maddeleine Bakker on numerous occasions.
Good defensive pressure from the Saints saw them secure a tight win.
In the final match, Lutheran accounted for St George’s by 16 goals.
It should have been an even game, but credit must go to Lutheran for an exceptional team effort headed by Lyndsee Wyatt and Sharla O’Neill.
The team excelled after the halftime break, putting on 15 goals to five, which proved to be the difference.
St George’s has been plagued by injury to all its sides, and has been putting on a brave face each week to finish the season gallantly.
