BASKETBALL SA became the first major South Australian sports association to suspend its season last week due to the COVID-19 pandemic, announcing on Friday that all scheduled fixtures will be postponed indefinitely as other sports weigh up their options.
On Monday, the AFL announced all state leagues, including the SANFL, will be postponed until May 31, where it will again be reassessed.
Barossa Light and Gawler Football Association president Mick Brien said the league will likely take its cues from the SANFL, but that SA country foot- ball leaders are coming together for a
meeting tonight.
However, several BLGFA clubs may force the league’s hand after Gawler Central and Willaston have immediately suspended all trainings, while South Gawler made the decision to suspend all juniors training sessions following the AFL’s decision to suspend state leagues.
Freeling put out a statement on Facebook that it will continue to train until advised otherwise by the SANFL, and included an accompanying club hygiene protocol.
In the USA, precedent was set by the NBA after it postponed its season when a single player, the Utah Jazz’s Rudy Gobert, was confirmed as testing positive for the virus.
The BLGFA would likely follow suit if a similar situation arises in the AFL, with round one scheduled to kick off at 6.55pm tomorrow night as Richmond plays Carlton in the empty MCG.
Cricket Australia recommended the cancellation of all cricket country-wide yesterday, with Barossa and Light Cricket Association, Para District Cricket Association and Adelaide Turf Cricket Association immediately halting their seasons.
The STARplex Swim Club also made the decision to cancel its upcoming carnival as it expected more than 500 attendants.
