A NEW-look Gawler Aquatic Centre was formally opened on Saturday following extensive refurbishments to the facility.

Around 350 people attended throughout the course of the day, taking advantage of the free entry into the centre and activities on offer.

The upgrades were made possible after Gawler Council secured a grant of $409,445 through the Federal Government’s Sports Australia Community Infrastructure Program.

Council contributed a further $533,055 which took the overall cost of the project to $942,500.

Works at the site were undertaken by Hindmarsh-based Mossop Construction + Interiors and included renovations to male and female change rooms, an updated first aid room, under-floor heating and a statement entrance piece.

Gawler Mayor Karen Redman said the upgrades had been well received by the community, with many pointing to the colourful features and updated change rooms as standouts.

“Pool users will benefit and enjoy the new well equipped changing areas, free access to lockers and dedicated family and all-inclusive areas,” she said.

“Council has also invested in new full-length automatic pool covers for the 50m pool which will assist in heating the pool and reduce costs.”

The re-opening coincided with the centre’s 58th season.

Gawler Amateur Swimming Club also unveiled new diving blocks, while the family and friends of Derek Sankey unveiled a memorial seat dedicated to the much loved, regular swimmer.

Mr Sankey passed away earlier this year.

Federal Member for Spence Nick Champion, Member for Light Tony Piccolo and Member of the Legislative Council John Dawkins attended the opening alongside Barossa Mayor Big Lange and Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty.

Life members of the Gawler Amateur Swimming Club were also in attendance which included Win Nicolai, Leanne Welch,  Patron Dr Bruce Eastick and Roger and Barb Greenhalgh.

Ms Redman encouraged the community to make full use of the upgraded facilities over the summer months.
