Redemption for Magpies
2 min read

TANUNDA claimed its first Barossa, Light & Gawler A-grade premiership since 2011 after defeating Angaston by 13 points in Saturday’s high-scoring grand final at Freeling Oval.

The Magpies, who were seeking redemption for last year’s grand final loss to Nuriootpa, had led by 40 points at three-quarter-time before the Panthers came storming home to get within nine points midway through the final term.

However, Tanunda’s Lachlan Agars, against the momentum, kicked a late goal for the Magpies to seal the grand final victory for his team.

Agars, who slotted five majors for the match, claimed the Hurn Medal for best on ground for his efforts.

There was plenty of relief in the Tanunda camp when the final siren blew, according to premiership coach Dean Terlich.

“My heart was in my mouth for the last quarter,” he said.

“But our third quarter was really good and set it up for us.

“Last year we got so close, but I’m rapt.”

Earlier, Tanunda got off to the perfect start, with Agars converting the first goal of the game.

However, the Panthers soon got a roll on as Ryder Eberhard kicked their first following a precise pass from player-coach Jay Shannon, which was quickly followed by Ben Antonie slotting another.

Jake Hood then crumbed out of a pack to give the Panthers a 13-point lead and put some doubt into the Tanunda camp.

However, an inspirational bit of play from Leigh Westhoff on the far wing changed the game.

The veteran midfielder smothered a ball before passing off to player-coach Terlich, who then spotted out key forward Josh Trembath who kicked his first goal of the game.

Trembath kicked his second to put his side back to within a point, before Agars slotted his second to give them the lead.

After the two sides exchanged blows, the Magpies led by seven points at quarter-time.

Trembath added his third major early in the second term, and despite Andrew Pech and Ben Antonie returning serve, the Magpies started to get on top.

Agars slotted another, as did Trembath before Ben Britton got in on the action with two to open up a 25-point buffer.

The Panthers again hit back, but the Pies repelled their attacks to lead by 23 points at half-time.

It was all about Tanunda in the third quarter, as it set up the win with free-flowing and relentless attacking football.

Britton slotted his third, while Ben Biagi and Jack May caused chaos with their pace.

Trembath and Nathan Petersen-Gray both goaled and the margin was 40 points in Tanunda’s favour at three-quarter-time.

After looking dead and buried, the Panthers came from the clouds, starting when Jayden Antonie capitalised on a free kick in the opening minute.

Hood and Eberhard goaled to cut the deficit to 22 points, before Steve Summerton completed the mark of the day with a one-handed grab in the pocket and converted.

With the momentum heavily against them, the Magpies were then dealt another blow with Schluter Medallist Riley McFarlane going off with a suspected head injury.

However, Agars eventually kicked his sealer, and despite two late goals from the Panthers, it was all over.
