Rams to host Wallabies
1 min read

BAROSSA Rams Rugby Club will play host to the Classic Wallabies and the Rugby World Cup trophy, the Webb Ellis Cup, on June 18 at Lyndoch Oval as a part of the Gold Blooded Tour.

The Rugby World Cup is set to get under way in late September and will run until early November in Japan, and the trophy itself will visit Clare, Port Augusta and Lyndoch, among other  destinations.

Barossa Rams president Mark Cooper said the tour is a massive coup for the local club.

“The Rugby World Cup is one of the biggest sporting competitions in the world, and to lift the trophy is the pinnacle of a rugby player’s sporting career from any country,” he said.

“It’s a bit unexpected, we didn’t really know about it until a few weeks ago.”

Mr Cooper said the club is still working out some of the finer details of the tour, but is eager to give as much involvement to players, families and sponsors as possible.

“Some of the Classic Wallabies, former Wallaby players that have an ongoing relationship with ARU, they’re going around with the World Cup and promoting the event,” he said.

“We’re the only rural rugby club in South Australia, and it’s a benefit for us to try and lift the profile of the game in the country area.

“It’s a great opportunity for our young kids, players, families, sponsors and other members to meet some of the classic wallabies and see the World Cup.

“Depending on what time they arrive, we’ll try some skills stuff with the juniors, possibly a bit of a talk and a presentation in the club rooms and invite them to have dinner at the Lyndoch Hotel.”

More details about the event will be released in the coming weeks.
