STUDENTS at Freeling Primary School have gained the answers to some of their trickiest questions thanks to one of the nation’s best known (and loved) scientists, ‘Dr Karl’ Kruszelnicki.
The grade four and five students recently took part in a 45-minute Skype session with Dr Karl, who holds degrees in science, medicine and biomedicine, and is popular for his long-running radio broadcasts in which he is able to explain complex concepts or ideas in just minutes.
Freeling Primary School wellbeing and pedagogy co-ordinator Ashley Gardner said Dr Karl was happy to answer any questions from the students, with nothing off limits.
Some of the questions included: how do we know what dinosaurs sounded like? Will we ever see dinosaurs again? What is under the soil on Earth? And, who taught the first teacher?
“The students (and staff) were amazed at the range and depth of knowledge Dr Karl had on so many different topics and were incredibly thankful to Dr Karl for giving up his time,” Mr Gardner said.
“Students at FPS have a focus on STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Maths) and are taught this using an inquiry based approach.
“The session with Dr Karl was fantastic to feed into that curiosity and show the value of being life-long learners.”
The students are now using some of the questions and answers from the session to direct their learning over the next few weeks, further researching some of the topics and conducting their own investigations.
