Poppy Brady, Young Citizen of the Year
1 min read

SIXTEEN-year-old Poppy Brady has been named as Light Regional Council’s Young Citizen of the Year for her kind and inclusive nature, and level of commitment to all that she does.

Poppy is a familiar face behind the counter at Litl Mo’s Bakery, Kapunda, where she has worked part time for two years and is described as a “polite, punctual and capable worker”.

She is also involved across a range of local sport, including netball, basketball, and barrel horse racing and roping.

She has previously placed 14th and 17th in her category in the national barrel racing competition and was also the state champion.

Poppy said to be awarded Young Citizen of the Year has come as a shock but is a humbling experience given how many people would have been eligible.

“I do like being busy,” she said.

“I am very much a people-person; I love meeting new people, and talking to people and learning about them.

“I find it very interesting and cool to find out about other people and how they live.”

This year Poppy will head into year 11 at Kapunda High School, where she is on the Student Representative Council.

She will also enter her second and final year of study for an aviation program, based at Mid North Christian College, Port Pirie, as she works towards her dream of becoming a pilot.

“I’ve now had four hours of flying experience, which is pretty cool,” she said.

“My auntie is a pilot for Jetstar and so is my uncle, and I want to do the same thing.”

Poppy was nominated by good friend and 2019 SA Local Hero recipient Megan McLoughlin who described her as displaying an “inclusive nature, especially to older persons or persons living with a disability”.
