PLAYFORD paused to remember the fallen at the Elizabeth RSL last Wednesday.

About 30 people attended the service led by Playford Uniting Church Reverend Peter Riggs.

Mayor Glenn Docherty, President of the Legislative Council John Dawkins, member for Taylor John Gee and member for Elizabeth Lee Odenwalder were present at the service.

South Australian Police were represented by Chief Inspector Astrid Gustavson and members of the Elizabeth Metropolitan Fire Service were also present.

Elizabeth RSL acting president Brett Stephenson said the sub-branch was pleased with the number of people that attended the service.

“I believe the service went off really well, the weather was really nice… and it was well received by all who attended,” he said.

“I think for the veteran community and the community at large it is vitally important for the RSLs to continue to do these type events.

“Considering we didn’t have an Anzac Day (service) that showed how important it is with the crowd we had.”

Mr Docherty said Remembrance Day was an important public reminder of the sacrifices soldiers have made and continue to make for the benefit of their country.

He said it was especially important that South Australians were given a chance to attend a service following the cancelation of Anzac Day services earlier this year.

“It is always a solemn, moving service here at the RSL on Remembrance Day,” he said.

“It is an opportunity for us to remember the fallen and it is fantastic that we can have these services to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“The least we can do is spend a few moments is to spend a few moments of our time reflecting at a service like this.”

Mr Stephenson thanked everyone for their participation in the service, from the public who attended to the committee who helped make the event possible.
