Playford councillor a Light candidate?
2 min read

A PLAYFORD councillor has put his hand up to take the place of outgoing Member for Light Tony Piccolo at the next state election.

Angle Vale resident and Playford elected member Clint Marsh recently joined the Labor Party and told The Bunyip he is planning a run at state politics in 2022.

Mr Marsh was elected to council in 2018 after running several community campaigns through social media which were critical of Playford.

He is targeting Labor pre-selection in a northern seat and said Light and Taylor – held by Labor’s Jon Gee – were his preferences.

“I acknowledge there’s rules and procedures at parties which have to be adhered to when it comes to preselection,” he said.

“I really want to show, on a state-wide approach, that I can address issues that haven’t been addressed, particularly in the north.”

Mr Piccolo announced last week he would vacate his safe Light electorate in 2022 to run against former transport minister Stephan Knoll in Schubert following a draft redraw of the state’s electoral boundaries.

SA Labor Party secretary Reggie Martin told The Bunyip a date was unknown for the opening of Light preselection nominations due to the short time frame since Mr Piccolo’s decision to swap electorates.

Given Mr Marsh only joined Labor two months ago, it is unclear whether he would be considered a chance for preselection in what would be safe Labor seats in the north.

Mr Marsh though said he would be open to running as an independent if he missed out on preselection and would drop out of the council chamber to facilitate his campaign.

“I think you do need to leave your options open, especially if that’s the only way to run,” he said.

“I think I’ve got what’s required to go it alone. I think the difference, depending on whether you go with a party or as an independent, is the level of support and the level of understanding how state politics runs.”

SA Liberal Party state director Sascha Meldrum confirmed to The Bunyip pre-selection dates were also yet to be confirmed for the party.

She added the party was preparing its response to the draft boundary redraw which is due this month, before the final boundaries are confirmed in November.
